Applying ethical theories to the decision-making of self-driving vehicles: A systematic review and integration of the literature.F. Poszler, Maximilian Geisslinger, Johannes Betz & Christoph Lütge - forthcoming - Technology in Society.
Self-driving vehicles will need to make decisions that carry ethical dimensions and manufacturers have (the responsibility) to pre-determine this underlying, deliberate decision-making process. With the rise of self-driving vehicles, scholars have simultaneously started investigating what ethical theories should guide machine behavior, but have not concluded as to which theory should be preferred and adopted. We aim to address this matter by providing a holistic and analytical review of the autonomous driving ethics literature. Based on this review, we summarize the social, (...)

  7. Understanding and Harnessing Placebo Effects: Clearing Away the Underbrush.F. G. Miller & H. Brody - 2011 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 36 (1):69-78.
Despite strong growth in scientific investigation of the placebo effect, understanding of this phenomenon remains deeply confused. We investigate critically seven common conceptual distinctions that impede clear understanding of the placebo effect: (1) verum/placebo, (2) active/inactive, (3) signal/noise, (4) specific/nonspecific, (5) objective/subjective, (6) disease/illness, and (7) intervention/context. We argue that some of these should be eliminated entirely, whereas others must be used with caution to avoid bias. Clearing away the conceptual underbrush is needed to lay down a path to understanding (...)

The Olivieri debacle: where were the heroes of bioethics?F. Baylis - 2004 - Journal of Medical Ethics 30 (1):44-49.
All Canadian bioethicists need to reflect on the meaning and value of their work, to see more clearly how the ethics of bioethics is being undermined from within. In the case involving Dr Olivieri, the Hospital for Sick Children, the University of Toronto, and Apotex Inc, there were countless opportunities for bioethical heroism. And yet, no bioethics heroes emerged from this case. Much has been written about the hospital’s and the university’s failures in this case. But what about the deafening (...)

    Veterinary Responsibilities within the One Health Framework.F. L. B. Meijboom & J. van Herten - 2019 - Food Ethics 3 (1-2):109-123.
Veterinarians play an essential role in the animal-based food chain. They are professionally responsible for the health of farm animals to secure food safety and public health. In the last decades, food scandals and zoonotic disease outbreaks have shown how much animal and human health are entangled. Therefore, the concept of One Health is broadly promoted within veterinary medicine. The profession embraces this idea that the health of humans, animals and the environment is inextricably linked and supports the related call (...)

    L'entropie generalisee (g-entropie), une mesure Des niveaux d'organisation.F. Collot - 1991 - Acta Biotheoretica 39 (3-4):287-298.

A Critique of the New Natural Law Theory.F. Russell Hittinger - 1989 - University of Notre Dame Press.
In this volume Russell Hittinger presents a comprehensive and critical treatment of the attempt to restate and defend a theory of natural law, particularly as proposed by Germain Grisez and John Finnis. A Critique of the New Natural Law Theory begins by examining the positions of various moral philosophers such as Alasdair MacIntyre, Alan Donogan, Elizabeth Anscombe, and Stanley Hauerwas, who wish to recover particular facets of premodern ethics. Hittinger then explores the work of Grisez and Finnis, who claim to (...)

An instrument to measure adherence to the Protestant Ethic and contemporary work values.F. Stanford Wayne - 1989 - Journal of Business Ethics 8 (10):793-804.
The problem of the current research is to develop an instrument that accurately measures individuals' adherence or nonadherence to both Protestant Ethic and contemporary work values. The study confirms that the traditional Protestant Ethic work values and the contemporary work values are different and the instrument used to measure the work values that individuals actually support is valid and reliable. Two scales were developed based on Protestant Ethic work values and contemporary work values. A four-point Likert scale was used to (...)

The Existential Dimension of Moral Experience.F. P. Bordet - 1968 - Philosophical Studies (Dublin) 17:74-94.
MY programme is as follows: I shall draw a general distinction between morals and moral philosophy in order to show that an ethical theory cannot be neutral and autonomous but must have an empirical foundation. Both ethical naturalists and existentialists agree that an adequate moral theory must be based on anthropological considerations. They however differ on one major issue: ethical naturalists maintain that such a theory must be scientifically grounded, existentialists that it must be grounded on experience phenomenologically described. The (...)
